Welcome Kyrie! Thanks for taking time for an interview. Can you tell us a little about yourself as a writer?
Thank you for having me! I’m a Canadian pathologist by day and a historical fantasy author by night (I do a lot of scribbling in my bedside notebook). Writing is my creative outlet and my way of processing emotions, especially stress and grief from my medical practice. My novels explore courage, redemption, and what it means to find light in dark times.
What inspired you to write the Enemy’s Keeper series?
The seed for Enemy’s Keeper came from my fascination with ordinary people who rise with extraordinary courage. I read about the heroes of Flight United 93, whose bravery saved many lives on September 11. I wondered what it would look like if an ordinary medieval healer found herself in a similar position. Can she rise above her insecurities and save her people?
The first book in the series is Healer’s Blade. Can you tell us what the book is about? What is your favorite aspect of Healer’s Blade?
18-year-old Aliwyn has already failed as a healer’s apprentice. She lives in shame and isolation during a revolt against William the Conqueror.
But when she hides an orphan the rebels want dead, she’s thrust into the bloody conflict. Aliwyn becomes the only civilian to witness rebels smuggling gunpowder into England, and she must overcome her insecurities to save her kingdom.
Can she resist the magnetic charms of the rebel leader she has sworn to defeat?
My favorite aspect of this book is watching Aliwyn grow from fearful to bold with support from the least likely person— her “enemy”, a rogue knight named Tobias Boltan.
The second book in the series, Traitor’s Heart, was recently released. Do fans need to have read Healer’s Blade before Traitor’s Heart? Can you tell us what the most exciting part of the book is?
Yes, Healer’s Blade should be read first, as Traitor’s Heart is a direct sequel.
This second installment is full of political intrigue, betrayal, and explosive battles (nothing over PG-13 rated), but the most exciting part is the first kiss. After several hundred pages of emotional buildup, betrayals, and secrets laid bare, I was thrilled to write that swoony scene. Readers also loved it!
I know your fans are eagerly awaiting the third book in the series. When will it be available? What will it be about?
I’m hoping for a spring 2027 release. I’m not a full-time writer, and my medical practice still takes priority.
Without giving too much away, Book 3 will continue the events of Traitor’s Heart. A mutual enemy, one that threatens everything my protagonists have fought for, will finally reveal itself. It’s going to test every alliance and every friendship they hold dear.
What is your writing process?
I always start with three things: an opening, an ending, and a climactic turning point somewhere in between. From there, I loosely plot the first few chapters to establish direction. Then I let the middle unfold organically.
If I over-plot, I inevitably abandon my outline anyway! Some of my favorite twists happened when I gave my characters the steering wheel.
Is there anything else you want to share with my readers?
If you enjoy clean romantasy or historical fantasy with powerful themes of faith, forgiveness, and courage, I’d love to welcome you into the Enemy’s Keeper world. My newsletter subscribers get a free ebook of my full-length novel The Thief’s Keeper (An Enemy’s Keeper Prequel). You can sign up at KyrieWang.com.
My audiobooks for The Thief’s Keeper and Healer’s Blade are also free on Hoopla.
Finally, thank you for reading and supporting indie authors like Heidi and me!
